Yesterday was as close to a “perfect day” as you could get for me.

Breakfast and dinner cooked by Steven (this blows my mind as after close to 13 years of marriage, he’s only JUST started cooking full-on dinner a few weeks ago!).

Kundalini yoga class with a wise circle of women.

A solo lunch and writing date at Kripalu, which I lovingly dub the “mothership.”

Then some gardening and getting my hands dirty.

And last night my family watched a powerful documentary about baseball legend Jackie Robinson.

So it was in the cafe at Kripalu – the largest yoga, wellness and personal development retreat center in North America – that I wrote a piece on motherhood (Mother’s Day energy!).

I believe that all women are mothers in some form. Whether we mother humans, animals, communities, businesses or the Earth (or all of these!), we are nurturing what matters. We are leaving a legacy through our decisions and through our love.

The word “mother” carries a lot of energy, a lot of weight, positive feelings and feelings that are very complex and hard. Many of us have a deep mother wound that we are actively healing.

Wherever you are in this conversation, know that I’m thinking of you. My work focuses on liberating women through the power of your sacred work.

Hope you enjoy my writing today.

And if you want to create some powerful messages this week with my guidance (this is my superpower!), make sure you sign up for the Tribe Building Challenge. 5 days of building your audience, business and confidence by getting more visible and vulnerable. We start today! (If you’ve already signed up, I’ll see you soon.)

ON MOTHERHOOD

I didn’t know I wanted to be a mother until I turned 30.

Up to that point, I was pretty ambivalent about the whole thing.I felt more passionate about and confident in my career. And mastering the whole “being married” thing, which I was still pretty new at.

To be honest, I didn’t think I would be good at mothering. I doubted myself. Didn’t have a lot of solid mentors here on how to do this in a way that felt good and felt like me.

My own relationship with my mother was tricky and that certainly clouded my view.

Once I learned to truly love my body and my life through the power of my yoga practice, those babies came calling. Those souls – one by one – knocked on the door of my soul and asked to join this FENIG FAMILY.

Saying YES was a humbling, life-affirming decision.

I realized Steven and I could do parenting and FAMILY our way, all the way.

We could create this unit with unconditional love at the center. We could make it work for us even if that meant breaking away from the crowd and how things are “typically” done.

We could move out of New York City to our beautiful home in the country. We could do work we love from home and travel for work as needed. We could bring the kids. Or we could go away while the other parent stayed with the kids and this was okay.

We could homeschool. We could hire amazing teachers to help us on this quest. We could love this so much and ignore the people who said we were crazy for loving this and doing this.

We could build an ice rink in the front yard during winter. We could spend tons of time outside. We could laugh ’til our sides hurt. We could go on road trips in the minivan I swore I’d never own.

We could see our children for who they truly are, not who we wish they would be. And we could support them, no matter what.

We could read tons of books together. We could wake up together and say I LOVE YOU everyday. We could define what FAMILY means.

We could create a HOME that feels safe, loving and fun.

We could. So we did.

Big love thanks to my children for choosing me as their MOM. And to Steven for trusting the call of FATHERHOOD.

1

And to my parents and grandparents for doing the best they could with what they had. It wasn’t an easy ride, but I’m grateful for the lessons. I’m grateful for the STRENGTH I’ve developed from the Proffitt + Amon lineages.

And to my in-laws for loving me as their daughter-in-law from day 1.

And to all the women who inspire me and remind me of what’s possible!

To MOTHERHOOD.

To FAMILY.

To becoming more ME everyday.

And to knowing, we never walk this path alone.

All the love,

Jenny
