My Greatest Initiation: Birth (+ NEW Workshop!)

One week ago, my oldest son Sean celebrated his 9th birthday. We were in Florida. I couldn’t resist the urge to WRITE about that experience of becoming a first-time mother.

I’ve committed to doing a lot more writing this year. Because it’s the craft that I love so much.

Here’s what I wrote …

At 10:51 p.m. on January 5, 2009, I crossed through a gate of INITIATION > motherhood.

My life would never be the same.

My Greatest Initiation: Birth (+ NEW Workshop!)

You should know that I was not that girl who knew she always wanted to be a mom. For many years, I was very much “undecided.” Prior to that, I was more in the NO camp.

My career aspirations seemed more exciting and worthy of my attention. Plus I had always been acknowledged for my leadership and success at work … I had a lot of doubts and fears about becoming a mother.

It didn’t help that my own mother told me that I probably shouldn’t become a mom since I was so “selfish.”

But something started shifting a few years after I got married.

I started feeling babies all around me. Started feeling a soul of a child ready to come through me. I started noticing children everywhere. In the past they used to come across as loud, wild nuisances … now, they appeared as magical angels of light (who are often loud!).

This also largely coincided with me diving headfirst into a 200-hour yoga teacher training. I was more in my body and more fascinated with the human body and soul than I had ever been.

I felt myself being pulled into a new dimension. A new chapter.

An opening emerged.

I stepped through.

After a few months of trying to get pregnant (and simultaneously doubting my body and relying more on science than spirit), I finally surrendered and TRUSTED.

We got pregnant that month. We lived in New York City at the time, but conceived in the place of my birth – St. Petersburg, Florida.

I was overjoyed. And also totally amazed that I WAS GOING TO BE A MOM.

Pregnancy was one of the most extraordinary times in my life. I was blessed to have “easy” pregnancies (I’ve had 3 now).

Having a natural birth (no interventions or drugs) was something I knew I wanted. I knew this even though my mother had told me when she was birthing me, she told the doctor to “kill her now” and that she gladly got an epidural when birthing my sister 4 years later. “I was reading a magazine when having a contraction – the only reason I knew I was having a contraction was because I could see the contraction on the monitor,” she told me.

No offense to those who go this route (for whatever reason!), but I wanted to feel EVERYTHING in labor and birth as I had spent so much of my life numbing, numbing, numbing – afraid to feel PAIN.

I saw this as a beautiful quest and one of the great rites of passage for me as a woman. I knew my body was designed to birth and I wanted to feel my power as my baby and I did what we both knew how to do.

I had to be willing to have many people tell me I was “crazy” for wanting to go this route.

I minimized the impact of those who couldn’t support my choice and instead surrounded myself with like-minded people.

I read books (“Magical Beginnings, Enchanted Lives” by Deepak Chopra was my fave at that time), watched “The Business of Being Born” (EYE-OPENING!) and assembled a birth team who would honor our wishes and would create a sacred, calm environment for the birth of my first child. I said “NO” to my mother’s repeated requests to be at the birth.

I followed my intuition EVERY STEP OF THE WAY even when what I was guided to do meant disappointing people or going against popular convention.

Sometimes my intuition led me to know more than “experts.” Like when I went into labor with Sean 2.5 weeks early and was told by the L+D doctor on call at the hospital that although I was having some contractions, the baby’s birth was days, if not weeks, away.

Even though this was my first pregnancy, I KNEW THE DOCTOR WAS WRONG.

How did I know?

Because I was in my body. I kept following the signs. Trusting the nudges I was getting. And connecting with spirit.

When Steven and I left that hospital, my body was full-on in labor … even though even he couldn’t accept it. I don’t think he felt fully ready to be a dad … he thought he had a few more weeks to prepare!

When we got home and he told me he was going to go to the gym, I looked at him like a women with fire inside of me and said firmly, “YOU ARE NOT GOING TO THE GYM.”

I promptly went into the bathtub in our NYC apartment and labored while Steven ate Chinese take-out (“Do you want any, Jenny?” he asked. “NO!” I groaned.) and timed my contractions.

Thank God my intuition told me to hire a doula because without her we wouldn’t have made it back to the hospital a few hours later. Steven would have needed to deliver our baby at home – that’s how quickly Sean was making his way into the world.

Our doula sped over to our apartment and helped me get dressed to head back to the hospital while I was in the hardest part of labor – TRANSITION. And my friend Kelly who was a doula in training also met us at the hospital to help me birth this baby.


Every contraction. (Like a giant wave forming in the ocean … growing in intensity until it crashed over me.)

Every centimeter opening.

And my body knew exactly what to do.

Knew how to open. Knew how to groan. Knew how to rest. Knew how to push.

My soul was fully alive as I joined forces with my baby.

We did it! We did it. We did it.

The last 9 years have flown and also been some of the most challenging of my life. Someone told me early on in my parenting journey – “The days can feel like they last forever yet the years fly by.” SO TRUE.

I’ve learned to sharpen my intuitive skills as a mother, woman and entrepreneur. I honestly believe my intuition is the most powerful gift I own – and I believe this for you too.

But it is SOOOO fucking easy to lose your connection to your intuition. Especially when you spend more time listening to everyone else over your own soul.

2018 can be the year you reclaim yourself and your truth and your divine wisdom.

The First-Time Ever + Our New Ice Rink

If you’re looking for my boys this winter, they’ll be in our front yard skating on our new rink!

This ice rink was all Steven’s doing. He saw something I couldn’t see. I’ve learned to trust his vision and he’s learned to trust mine. We still freak each other out at times, but we have that foundation of faith in each other.

Our good fortune keeps growing beyond the beyond.


When I met Steven 15 years ago, I had recently ended a 2-year relationship. I had pretty much sworn off men so I could fully focus on my public relations career. I was working on a global campaign for my client Pfizer and traveling around the world with our celebrity spokesperson Pele, the soccer superstar.

But one Friday night in 2003, Steven and I met at the front desk of our huge apartment building in New York City. I had sworn off men remember, especially Jewish men since I had dated a few and they tended to eventually freak out that I wasn’t Jewish (my Shiksa Goddess appeal could only take us so far!).

Well there he was. And there I was.

I was closed off at first. But my intuition kept nudging me to pay attention to this man.

And my intuition is never wrong. It was right on that evening. I listened. And everything changed for the better …

The Power of the Pause

As I write this, I’m overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It’s freaking HUGE. I’m in love.

Steven and I stayed the night in a hotel on Ft Lauderdale Beach while the kids stayed with his parents.

One word for you … MAGIC.


24 hours together.

To make it even sweeter, this getaway was during the tail end of my 2-week social media sabbatical + time off from work.

Holy wow.

I am a new woman.

I have a newfound appreciation for Steven because I’ve taken the time to get to know him again.

What his dreams are. What he’s afraid of. What we want to do together in this brand new year. How we can better support and love each other.

Life with young kids will have an impact on your relationship. Fact.

It’s easy to forget what it was like with just the 2 of us.

But now I remember again.

I’m grateful for my man and the close to 15 years we’ve spent loving each other.

I’m grateful for this PAUSE I’ve just taken in my work (honestly pausing is when the work truly begins).

I’m grateful I wasn’t afraid of becoming irrelevant for stepping away from social media for a bit.

I went INSIDE. Got cozy with my family. I know where I’m headed next. I’m in faith.

Whatever I missed I was meant to miss. And what I gained was gold. I will share much of this with you.

In the coming weeks I will reveal the next level of what I’m here to teach. It may surprise you … or not 😘

The power of the pause brought so much clarity and space in my head.

I am in flow.

I am home.

Sooooo excited about what we’ll create in 2018 + beyond.

Coming Out of the Spiritual Closet … Again

Here we go again …


Time to expand.

Time to go deeper.

Time to become more VISIBLE.

Time to SURRENDER some more.

The best way to describe what I’m doing is that I’m coming out of the spiritual closet … again. I first wrote about coming out of the spiritual closet a year ago. It was a huge moment for me.

And here I am again. Naked. Exposed. Ready to climb new mountains, including …

  • Closing my free Facebook group of more than 4,000 members and opening up a more curated group of students of my work (I’m choosing to cultivate a sacred circle of women who have read my book and/or signed up for one my programs, retreats or courses through the years)
  • Interviewing Danielle LaPorte for my tribe of leaders about the SOUL OF SERVICE
  • Starting a regular Facebook Live show on my Facebook page (Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. EST)
  • Opening applications for my mastermind GLOW (and evolving the program so we can serve more women yet stay committed to going DEEP together)
  • Leading several VIP Strategy Retreats for amazing clients
  • Channeling my deceased sister Julie to deliver a message to a client
  • Starting the homeschool journey for both of my boys

I’m writing this after having an extraordinary few days. My husband Steven took our 3 kids to his parents (and to the US Open!) while I opted to stay home and make some magic happen.

I organized the entire house – especially focusing on the playroom, homeschool space, and my office.

I rearranged stuff, threw lots away, had a call with my Facebook ads team (we have an awesome campaign coming at ya!), played with my new revenue model spreadsheet, and created the weekly schedule for our family (color coded it and everything!) including our meal plans. (I spent very little time on the Internet – no distractions!)

And I napped in my hammock. And slept in until 9:30 a.m. one morning!

Holy shit.

I told Steven, just give me regular open space and watch what magic happens. I’m grateful he gets it and gets me.

I need regular alone time. Lots of quiet. This means I must be willing to do things by myself, away from the masses.

If you need this too, speak up about your needs and desires. You don’t do anyone any favors by ignoring your true nature.

When you get quiet, you can hear the small, still voice inside. That voice is the most powerful guide you have. Listen and heed the call.

Listening to that voice is something I help my clients to do. It sounds so easy, right? But it’s not.

We’re conditioned from a young age to listen to everyone else over ourselves. To follow the crowd. To dim our light. To fit in. Don’t be too loud. 

But when you surrender to SPIRIT and the SACRED WORK you are here to do, WATCH THE FUCK OUT.

This is the magical art and science of being a LEADER. I LOVE TO TEACH THIS STUFF to a hungry audience of women on a mission, women who are tired of the bullshit they are seeing online.

What does spiritual business leadership entail?

A connection to SPIRIT and a willingness and discipline to go inward, daily.

The guts to make moves even when you can’t see all of the steps that lie ahead.

The courage to listen to your audience and solve their problems through your elegant solutions (programs, courses, books, podcasts, workshops, retreats, masterminds, sessions, VIP Days, meditations, the list goes on!).

The mindset to price your offerings to profit and to be excited to SELL and SERVE.

Being okay with the critics you attract and trusting that you can follow Michelle Obama’s advice here:

“When they go low, we go high.”


Selling is Serving

That’s why the next season of my work is focused on helping my clients GO HIGH in their work >> high vibe, high touch, high end.

The online space is a changing … and I see too many casualties of business where coaches are giving up because they do NOT have a sustainable business model. They are trying to appeal to the masses through a cheap approach. They don’t realize the complexity of trying to grow a business by selling $97 courses alone.

This GO HIGH approach is something I’ve tested out in my own business and am in love with. The quality of client I am attracting now is top notch. These women are committed to doing the work (and slaying the dragons that step on your path along the way).

I want this for you too.

Because burnout is a bitch. And so is not earning enough in your business to give your family the life they (and YOU!) deserve.

When I first “came out of the spiritual closet” by positioning my business as the go-to for spiritual coaches, creatives and entrepreneurs, I’ve gotta tell you: I was a bit concerned about claiming the word “spiritual.”

I don’t consider myself religious, but my spirituality has become more and more core to who I am.

I call in Spirit Guides.

Talk to angels (including my sister Julie).

Pray to God.

Meditate on mountain tops.

Keep crystals on hand.

Diffuse essential oils in my home.

Infuse spirit into my creations.

Have been a practitioner of yoga for 16 years and went on a life-changing trip to India this year.

Spirituality is one of my FAVORITE topics in the whole wide world (in addition to ONLINE BUSINESS + claiming your power as a LEADER).

People who love spirituality as much as I do are my FAVORITE people in the world.

I do my best work when I blend my FAVORITES into one juicy concoction.

And my results prove it.

Don’t be afraid to embrace your spiritual foundation and talk about it in your work.

Many of us have been conditioned to hide for risk of being misunderstood or shunned, but I’m here to say: do not WORRY.

Do not be afraid.

My spiritual relationship keeps me young, curious and wise.

My spiritual relationship is my biggest strength as a CEO, coach, wife, mother and human.

The Making of a Coach [Part 6]: Experiments, Simplicity, Awards + Curveballs


** This is the final installment in a multi-part series on how I’ve built my coaching business. Enjoy!

2016 – my 9th year in business as a coach – has been, in a word: interesting.

I write this post at the end of a super, super intense few months.

The last quarter of 2016 was one of the most challenging I’ve ever faced.

I wanted to create something really extraordinary to wrap up this series and capture this year, but I’m at a place of surrender instead.

I thought I’d pull together all these fancy graphics and really sketch out the flow of this post before I began, but instead my inner voice is saying, “fuck it Jenny … just write.”

I’m listening to that wise counsel.

My tank has been teetering on close to empty for too long now.

So … instead of aiming for “epic,” I’m aiming for “real.”

Where shall we begin?

I suppose I’ll touch on some key themes and lessons that came up for me this year … then I’ll tell you more about the challenges and gifts of my most recent months.

Run the experiment … everything is a test

Okay, so I got schooled in this concept last year when I read “The Surrender” Experiment” by Michael A Singer. OMG. So good. That should be required reading for humans.

This year I truly started embracing this “testing” concept in business where I ran A LOT of tests under the guidance of my coach Jennifer Kem who I hired earlier this year.


I tested free challenges on Facebook (I ran 5 this year!), more than $40,000 in Facebook ads, price points for programs, different types of launches, and podcast publishing frequency.

I tested how best to offer up my awesome Tribe Building Bootcamp course, which is a perfect entry-point into my business as it gives customers a simple framework to follow to grow their tribe online.

Let me tell you, I have A LOT of data. A LOT.

Some of my tests were huge successes. Happy dance! Some were bombs. Painful bombs.

And I’m grateful for the lessons … because I’ll build on what works, and sidestep what doesn’t for ME in 2017.

And my clients and students get to learn from a coach and teacher who speaks from experience and not just theory. Yes, I’m in the trenches … just like you.

Honor your soul during a launch (what works for “them” may not work for you)

I launched A LOT of programs this year. A lot.

Frankly, I’ve been launching programs for several years so I’m not a newbie here. I have my own style of launching for sure. It’s very organic, simple and intuitive.

In an effort to grow the business this year and take some of the load off of my so I could operate in my Zone of Genius, we grew the team (my people are amazing, smart and committed) and executed some pretty complex launches.


I wanted to see what that whole deal felt like. I kind of thought to be a big “player” you needed to have a million movable parts in a project.

What I’ve learned, I don’t have the interest or bandwidth right now to be a part of very complex launches and projects.

My mantra: KEEP IT SIMPLE.

I’m looking for the best results with least amount of effort.

And I got away from that a bit this year.

No regrets, simply powerful lessons learned about how I want to chart the course next year.

Leave the complex launches for the marketing ninjas who delight in the nitty gritty details. I’m more of a big picture gal. Less is more to me.

Knowing your numbers is mission-critical

Big shout-out to my financial strategist Carol LeBlanc for helping me LOVE + KNOW my business numbers in 2016.

Honestly knowing my numbers was something I RESISTED in the past.

“I don’t like numbers,” I would say. “They’re not my thing.”

As a creative, I wanted to immerse myself in more artistic pursuits.

But alas, the numbers must be cared for in a business … or else, you’ll go out of business.

While numbers don’t tell the WHOLE story, they don’t lie either.

So grateful I hired Carol a year ago (after she wrapped up her time in my mastermind) to help take my business to another level.

We have had a GREAT year.

Profits are up 80% compared to last year … and I feel like I have a trusted advisor in the financial piece of this work.

Know this >> what you focus on, grows.

Next year, I’m bringing an every stronger focus on expenses and cutting back what isn’t essential to our growth. Because it’s super easy to spend more when you make more. And this can get dicey.

I was willing to spend this year to run all the tests I wanted to run … but now that I have some solid data, I can make smarter decisions next year.

Fun fact: I went through and cut services that we don’t need in 2017 and have already saved the business $4,800!

And what do you need to invest in to trigger growth?

Spiritual growth = business growth


For sure. The deeper I dove into my connection with Spirit, the better I felt. My weekly podcast helps with this as I talk to fantastic guests who ALWAYS have a message that I’m meant to hear.

I followed the call of Spirit when I attended a 2-day spiritual retreat with John of God, a Brazilian medium, at Omega Institute. It was deeply healing. What was super-cool is that I planned to go with one of my clients. We did a VIP Day together here in the Berkshires, then we both enjoyed our time at John of God.

Speaking of listening to Spirit, I’m doing this big-time in January when I lead a 5-night retreat in Costa Rica for my GLOW Mastermind clients.

Here’s the story …

Earlier this year, I received a divine download in a yoga class.

The message I heard >> “Jenny, it’s time to lead a retreat in Costa Rica.”

You should know that I’ve never been to Costa Rica before.

And yet, I knew the message was meant for me.

And so I committed.

Found the epic venue.

Signed the contract.

Rallied the troops to join me.

Filled my GLOW mastermind with the most exquisite traveling companions.

You should know something about me.

When I get a clear signal, I act on it. This is how I’ve grown my business since the beginning. That’s how I’m still standing when most small businesses don’t survive past the 5-year mark.

“I am not a woman. I am not a man. I am not a person. I am not myself. I am a teacher.”

I LOVE to teach. LOVE IT.

I actually entered college wanting to be a high school English teacher. Realized early on that wasn’t the exact right path for me, but I never lost my love of teaching.

That’s why I love my coaching school so much (heads-up enrollment for our January 2017 class closes on Monday, December 19!).

Because I get to teach lightworker leaders how to cash in on their calling with their gifts. It’s so much fun.

As a teacher and head of my business, an affirmation that has stretched me to make important and big decisions is the Kundalini teacher’s oath >>

“I am not a woman. I am not a man. I am not a person. I am not myself. I am a teacher.”

Strips away all of the “shoulds” and “guilt” and “Oh my, I don’t know if I can do what needs to be done here” bullshit and simply allows you to stand strong in your wise teacher energy to offer your student / client / tribe member the lesson you are meant to teach them.

And you’re both better for it.

Stop disqualifying yourself

I’ve let a lot of opportunities pass me by because I felt like I wasn’t “ready” or “good enough.”

The shitty script that many of us operate from is “you’re not good enough.” It’s brutal.

And while I’ve done A TON of work on myself to flip the script, the low-vibe message still gets the best of me at times.

But I’m proud that instead of disqualifying myself again for a prestigious award called The Stevie Awards for Women in Business, I WENT FOR IT (thanks to Elaine Wellman on my team not letting me ignore the opp!) and WON a Silver Stevie for COACH OF THE YEAR.

Proud 🙂

It has been a hard slog to get here, but worth every step.


Challenges are gifts in disguise

This final piece focuses on the curveball my family was hit with in October. In a nutshell, my 2nd grade son Sean stopped going to school.

(This was also the exact time that we were in the midst of our Get Gutsy Coach Training School launch. Plus I have 2 other children to raise! One something happens to one, it tends to throw off the entire group – yikes.)

Something happened at his school one day that totally freaked him out.

And he was unable to return to the classroom (despite many, many attempts).

After 2 months of talking to and working with experts, healers, guides … and even visiting different schools … my husband and I came to the realization that the best thing for Sean at this time is to homeschool him for the rest of the school year and then see where we go from there.


It’s the right move for Sean, and for our family, right now.

I was totally freaked out at first (how will I ever pull this off?) but I am now totally at peace and so excited.

So is my boy!

My husband and I are sharing the teaching and working around our work schedules. His schedule is flex like mine and we are seeing this as one giant gift.

We have several friends who homeschool and I’ve been consulting with those who have been walking this path.

I’ve redesigned my schedule for 2017 and am ready to give my son what he needs to be all he can be.


I am a mother, hear me roar.

I know I’m going to be so much more focused and efficient next year in my business – I’ll have to be!

High-value projects only.

Uber-committed clients and students only.

Best results from smartest amount of effort.

I’ll be batching my content creation (podcasts, videos and blog posts) to ensure my creativity is unleashed in a way that is sustainable and intelligent.

No more leaking energy! No more wasting resources.

2017 is already unfolding in magical ways and I am continuing to surrender and trust.

Been a long road to get here. I feel good + free.

Truth time …

I’ve sacrificed A LOT to build my business.

There’s been pressure on my shoulders to grow, grow, grow (my own doing).

This curveball we were thrown was a gorgeous (and painful) reminder to slow the eff down and enjoy my children.

Truly be with them.

Not rush to get shit done all the time.

Enjoy the mess.

Grow amidst the chaos … and do it at my own pace (knowing I can slow or quicken my pace at any time).

Our 2 new tortoises Goldilocks and Checkers are reminding me of the idea … “slow and steady wins the race.”


They combine well with our 2 cats Cricket and Michael who have mastered the art of relaxing (admittedly, a struggle for me!).

In 2017, I’m embracing slow, steady, relaxing EXPANSION that nourishes me and my family.

I was reminded of the fragility of life a few weeks ago when my friend Shannon died of cancer.

She has the same number of kids as me – 3 – all in the same pattern …

2 boys close in age … then #3 is our girl.

This quote carried me through the days after her death …
