Stand Up for What You Believe In

So something I’m really excited about in 2017 is writing more. Straight up writing.

I got away from my true, true love a bit last year and my soul suffered. My business grew, but I’m not just in this for the money.

I’m in this for the joy it brings me.

Because when I feel joy, I trust that my joy is making its way around the world and touching you in your corner of the world too.

So I’ve redesigned the way I’m communicating with you and serving you … and making writing – real, raw … not just “promo” copy, but rather, straight-up truth talk – a regular part of my marketing and connection plan.

IMG_0722

And when things are wild and crazy, I am even MORE grateful to be a writer.

(Freaking out right now? WRITE IT OUT. Pen to paper. Write.)

Ya’ll, the world feels like it’s turning upside down right now. Is it just me or do you feel it too?

It’s like I’m on those crazy roller coaster where you hang upside down for what seems like forever while your stomach churns. Then you free fall …

Look, I know I may lose fans and customers as a result of me speaking about politics and world affairs, but so be it. I’ve lived with that fear in the past and “played it safe” with my messaging because I didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes.

“Being the good girl” is still something I grapple with.

Of course I don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings by speaking up, but I also must be able to look at myself in the mirror when it’s all said and done and use my platform for good.

As leaders, we have a responsibility to use our voice to take a stand and make true change in the world.

One of the hallmarks I stand behind is to TAKE A STRONG POSITION.

Don’t be wishy washy.

What does this mean?

And why does this matter so much right now?

It means you must STAND UP FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN.

Even if this means you will lose some business (trust me, you’ll get better opportunities when you’re true to yourself!).

I get why you may feel scared to take a position when we’re trying so hard to not offend anyone.

Women have been conditioned for generations to not step on any toes less we get labeled “bitchy,” “rude,” “bossy,” “opinionated” or “political.”

fc336b24e989cb73c1734f40dc8a2f68

I’ve seen many women online say that it’s unacceptable to talk about politics, religion or money in public.

Um … what’s that all about?

Your lack of conviction to take a position about what you really feel on social media, in your blog posts, during meetings or conversations means that you don’t add much to the conversation. Your contributions (or lack thereof) are easily forgotten.

While you may be easy on the eyes, you were meant to be so much more than that.

Your unwillingness to stand up for what you believe means you get lost in a sea of sameness.

This also happens when you don’t specifically identify WHO YOU WORK WITH and WHAT SPECIFIC PROBLEM YOU SOLVE.

Your desire to help “everyone” with “everything” means your marketing falls in the giant abyss of nothingness.

You’re casting your net way too wide.

You’re, essentially, wasting your time … and your potential.

Leaking energy.

Trying to please everyone and killing yourself and your business in the process.

Enough.

You must take a position.

Have a point of view.

Defend that point of view and yet listen to other points of view without a need to prove that you’re “right” and they are “wrong.”

Aim to understand a little bit more today than you did yesterday.

And yet still stand strong for what you believe.

Keep your eyes open.

Point out injustices.

Put your money where your mouth is.

Know that it’s okay to “lose” people along the way.

You can’t help everyone. You can’t change everyone’s minds (especially on the internet!).

You won’t be liked by everyone.

Nor should you try.

You must be clear on who you help and why.

For me, I help spiritually-connected coaches, healers and creatives to grow their businesses without burning out.

We do this through getting crystal clear on your SOUL’S VISION and translating this into a series of aligned actions and intelligent packages and offers that attract your dream clients.

99% of my clients are women.

And we also help a small yet mighty crew of men who are open to being around a bunch of strong, smart, outspoken women.

Keeping us separate doesn’t seem to make much sense anymore. The separateness is causing a lot of trouble in the world now. And what we don’t need more of is SEPARATE.

ACTION STEP >> WHO DO YOU HELP? And what problem do you help them solve?

AlchemyLive-135

What Do You Believe?

In the noisy world we live in, it’s easy to lose connection with your own truth. We start picking up on OPO (Other People’s Opinions) and don’t know how WE truly feel about an issue.

Beware of this.

You always, always, always want to be clear on what YOU believe … even if what you believe is different than important people in your life … or the “majority.”

As for me, I believe that the vast majority of the people in the world are good.

I believe in humanity.

I believe in family.

I believe we are all God’s children.

I believe that love is love is love.

I believe in yoga, meditation, angels, spirit guides, crystals, essential oils, candles, palo santo and sage.

altar

I believe in America.

I believe in the world.

I believe in doing unto others as you’d have them do unto you.

I believe in healing your wounds and not putting your “stuff” on someone else to deal with.

I believe that when someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.

I believe that I can learn a lot about leadership by watching what many in public positions of power do … and then doing the opposite.

I believe we are alive to use our voices and gifts to affect positive change in the world (starting with ourselves).

I believe that empowering my tribe to harness their spiritual gifts to achieve financial freedom is the best gift I can offer the world.

I believe in investing in what you value (contributions/investments lately include quality journalism with the New York Times; civil liberties with the American Civil Liberties Union; and global entrepreneurship and microloans with Kiva).

I believe that history has a way of repeating itself if you aren’t careful. (My Jewish mother-in-law was forced to flee Nazi Germany as a young child … she has taught me so much about staying vigilant and using your voice as she writes Letters to the Editor to the New York Times often. She’s been published more than 20 times.)

I believe that power can be misused when in the hands of mentally unfit people.

I believe in deeply and completely loving and accepting myself.

I believe in you.

I believe this isn’t “business as usual.” This is anything but usual. We must address the elephant in the room … and get to the root.

I believe that no matter what horrible things are happening in the world, there are always helpers making things better.

I believe in your right to disagree with me, agree with me or not care about what I have to say.

I believe that we can have different beliefs and still be kind to each other … and still learn from each other.

I believe in the leaders in my industry who speak out about their beliefs and inspire me to be courageous enough to speak out about mine.

Shoutout to some of them below. Deep bow.

================

Where do we go from here?

Honestly I’m not sure.

It feels like uncharted territory yet it also feels like we’ve navigated super choppy waters together before.

For many of you, it’s calling your lawmakers.

Marching.

Protesting.

Writing.

Debating.

Donating.

Volunteering.

Crying.

Unfriending. Unfollowing. Unsubscribing.

Doubling down.

Hugging your family extra tight.

Worrying.

Not worrying at all.

Celebrating.

Do what feels right.

Do right by your conscious. And your moral compass.

Don’t let anyone silence you.

I Love You

I woke up at 5 a.m. today (thanks, alarm!).

Drank my standard hot water with lemon, followed by green tea.

Took some deep breaths. Got centered. Focused on what I wanted to accomplish and why.

And got to work … on a Sunday … while my family slept.

We leave for another vacation this week (trip #2 this month) and I can’t go until I cross a few items off my to-do list.

Podcast episode.

Promo campaign for the Get Gutsy Challenge (sign up for free here – we start this Thursday).

Updating the autoresponders for the free 7-day challenge that will LIGHT UP the internet (gotta love automation).

Writing this blog post.

Reading candidate applications for GLOW.

Replying to a few emails.

Turning on my out of office email response.

And I’m willing to do all of this because I LOVE YOU.

I do.

Jenny-202

I truly love my people.

I love serving you.

I love helping you.

I love guiding you.

I love teaching you.

I love coaching you.

I love celebrating with you.

I love giving you a healthy dose of tough love when necessary.

I love RISING with you.

I love offering you free stuff.

I love selling you solutions to your problems.

“A customer is the most important visitor on our premises, he is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him.

He is not an interruption in our work. He is the purpose of it. He is not an outsider in our business. He is part of it.

We are not doing him a favor by serving him. He is doing us a favor by giving us an opportunity to do so.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

I LOVE MY CUSTOMERS.

Without YOU, I have NO BUSINESS.

Without YOU, I’m unable to LEAD.

So I ask you today … do you LOVE TO SERVE?

Do you love your customers?

You must.

Yes, you’re going to get some pain-in-the-butt customers and annoying critics from time to time (to be expected), but don’t focus on them.

Focus on those who are truly in alignment with you work.

Focus on your ideal clients.

Jenny-24

Notice I said “IDEAL” (not “anyone with a pulse”).

Because if you try to market to and serve “everyone,” you’ll serve no one. You won’t be in business long.

It’s up to you to attract a GORGEOUS AUDIENCE that is absolutely amazing.

Stellar.

Dreamy.

Committed.

Grateful.

Action takers.

High-vibe.

Your vibe attracts your tribe.

It’s up to YOU to attract a tribe who you WANT to get up at 5 a.m. for before you head out for vacation.

If you are only serving people who you want to RUN AWAY from, then we need to look at your business.

If you have designed a business that’s not working for you, then it’s time to get in alignment.

Your spiritual foundation is crucial here.

I recently wrote about my dedication to SERVICE and why we do what we do.

Sharing it with you now … perhaps you want to write a version for your business?

Here it is …

Coming Out of the Spiritual Closet

I’ll be honest, I’m nervous.

AlchemyLive-135

Why?

I’m about to embark on more expansion in my business.

Leading a live retreat + masterclass next week for 40 people.

Signing a contract for my first sacred retreat I’ll host OUTSIDE of the United States (Costa Rica, baby!).

Launching GLOW mastermind and committing to an exciting promotional strategy.

Investing more heavily in team.

And also I’m attending a retreat led by Gabby Bernstein this weekend! I went last year too and it cracked me open in the most glorious way.

So with the excitement comes the nerves.

Does that ever happen to you?

It’s like that old familiar voice starts up wanting to keep me safe.

That voice is really my Inner Critic.

It’s never expansive. Always restrictive.

But I’ve learned to put the Inner Critic on mute when I’m focused on creating more impact in my work, when I’m focused on creating something new, when I’m focused on growth.

And as CREATORS, we are ALWAYS moving into new terrain. We are always pushing the envelope. We are always experimenting.

And this often comes at a price.

Fear.

Doubt.

Anxiety.

Worry.

Nerves.

Critics.

Things not working out the way we hope.

Biting off more than we can chew.

Not having as much free time as we’d like with our families or friends.

But I’ve found that the more I deepen my SPIRITUAL RELATIONSHIP, the more I co-create with the Universe.

The easier it all becomes.

It’s kinda trippy.

I can say with conviction, SPIRITUAL GROWTH = BUSINESS GROWTH.

It’s a powerful concept.

One that I’ve been testing this last year interviewing spiritual entrepreneurs ascending to higher and higher levels of leadership and success.

My motivation for my podcast Get Gutsy was to get in there deep with these fascinating leaders and learn more about their journey and their spiritual practice.

I wanted to understand what made them tick.

I wanted to understand how they stay centered when life throws them curve balls.

I wanted to understand how they play at the top of their game.

I wanted to find a common thread uniting these different players and share that with my audience.

That common thread is a connection with source energy, the Universe, God, Spirit, the Divine, Goddess, Great Mother (different names, same energy).

This connection to SPIRIT stems from a willingness and discipline to go inward, daily.

When you do this, so many of your million-dollar ideas come. They literally start dropping from the sky like magic.

Still blows me away though I learn to trust the downloads AND am so much more comfortable with them happening ALL THE TIME.

What else does spiritual business leadership entail?

The guts to make moves even when you can’t see all of the steps that lie ahead.

The courage to listen to your audience and solve their problems through your elegant solutions (programs, courses, books, podcasts, workshops, retreats, masterminds, sessions, VIP Days, meditations, the list goes on!).

The mindset to price your offerings to profit and to be excited to SELL.

Being okay with the critics you attract and trusting that you can follow First Lady Michelle Obama’s advice here:

“When they go low, we go high.”

Boom.

It’s been close to a year since I “came out of the spiritual closet” by positioning my business as the go-to for spiritual coaches, creatives and entrepreneurs.

I’ve gotta tell you: I was a bit concerned about claiming the word “spiritual.”

I don’t consider myself religious, but my spirituality has become more and more core to who I am.

I went to Joel Osteen’s Night of Hope a few months ago (obsessed with his podcast too!).

Have seen Rob Bell’s “Everything is Spiritual” tour.

I call in Spirit Guides.

Talk to angels (including my sister Julie).

Pray to God.

Meditate on mountain tops.

Keep crystals on hand.

Diffuse essential oils in my home.

Have been a practitioner of yoga for 15 years (planning an epic trip next year that will take me DEEP, DEEP, DEEP into my yoga practice).

Spirituality is one of my FAVORITE topics in the whole wide world (in addition to ONLINE BUSINESS + claiming your power as a LEADER).

People who love spirituality as much as I do are my FAVORITE people in the world.

I do my best work when I blend my FAVORITES into one juicy concoction.

Hands3

And my results prove it.

Already in 2016, our revenues have grown 63% compared to this time last year.

Our list size has grown (and become stronger as we’ve released those who aren’t in alignment with this work and attracted those who are!).

My team has grown substantially. And these are amazing souls. Because dreams absolutely need teams.

I’m having A LOT more fun.

A lot.

I’m simplified a shit ton in my business.

Hired a business consultant and joined her mastermind.

Let go of commitments and relationships that were holding me back.

Said NO to a lot so I could say YES to the truly meaningful.

This is my 9th year in business and I can honestly say that I feel like I’m JUST GETTING STARTED.

I think that’s the biggest win.

What is spirituality and how does it play a role in your work?

I asked my tribe this juicy question and got some powerful responses I want to share with you.

“Spirituality to me is connecting with a higher consciousness. Whether it be with The Divine, One’s Higher Self, The Angelic Realm, Ascended Masters, Spirit Guides, etc. It is an innate knowing of the truth. It’s trusting, and having faith that you’re fully loved and supported, even when things don’t seem to be going in the direction you would like. I’m a strong believer in, “Everything Happens for a Reason.”

We ALL have Free Will, yet, we continue to have faith in God’s plan for us. We do this by letting go and surrendering. Apply all this to your spiritual based practice, and speak your truth from the heart. Trusting that you are a channel/messenger in helping other’s shine their light, as well. Be authentic and spread LOVE.” – Tara Marulli

“Wow what a question. Spirituality to me is believing that a higher power (The Universe, The Divine, God/dess …) exists and is available to guide me. It means that I am not alone. It means I can surrender and trust. I can ask for insights. And when I listen, answers come.

My spiritual exploration resulted in an exciting evolution (which is still unfolding) in my business — working on your team! — which is already fulfilling, fun, lucrative and I do it all with ease.” – Elaine Wellman

Don’t be afraid to embrace your spiritual foundation and talk about it in your work. Many of us have been conditioned to hide for risk of being misunderstood or shunned, but I’m here to say: do not WORRY. Do not be afraid.

My spiritual relationship keeps me young, curious and wise.

My spiritual relationship is my biggest strength as a CEO, coach, wife, mother and human.

And it’s one of 6 golden keys that make up the strategic framework and crucial support for your beautiful, sustainable growth.

I’ll be sharing the 2nd golden key of SPIRITUAL BUSINESS LEADERSHIP in the next installment of this blog series so stick around, okay?

Because I know your mission matters.

And I want to help you MOVE YOUR MISSION FORWARD.

And I’d love to read your COMMENTS below… how does your spiritual relationship impact your business? Were you ever afraid to come out of the spiritual closet in your business for fear of what people may think? How did you overcome that?

Healing the Relationship with My Mother

me+mom

My mom and I just had a pretty powerful visit together.

Us spending time together in this way – real, honest, loving – feels like a huge accomplishment.

We didn’t talk for the first half of 2015.

This was a very tough decision. I needed some space to heal and think and be.

When I posted this on Facebook a few days ago, someone asked me why I wasn’t talking to my mom earlier this year. My response: “Needed some space in our relationship to find a healthier way forward.

That’s the best way to describe it.

How did we find that healthier way forward?

In my case, a lot of self inquiry, therapy, forgiveness and letting go.

While attending Gabby Bernstein’s spectacular Kripalu retreat in August, I received the download during one of our meditations to invite my mom to my spiritual business retreat ALCHEMY Live (it would be her first time attending one of my events and truly seeing what I do).

Gabby B

A piece of this realization may have been due to me “randomly” sitting next to Gabby’s mother Susan during one of our sessions. I felt that motherly energy and missed my mom whose name is also Susan! I decided I wanted to reestablish a relationship while we still had the chance.

I listened to that Divine Download and texted my mom during the retreat and asked if she wanted to attend my event in October.

Her response: YES.

That support meant so much to me as I was moving to the next level in my work.

Leading a spiritual business is amazing and terrifying at times. It’s easy to feel “alone” as you make leaps, take risks and move forward.

To have the support of your parents, spouse, children and friends makes the road smoother.

This isn’t always possible, but know that patience is often required.

So back to my event …

ALCHEMY Live was epic. Not only did my mom Susan attend, but she was a speaker!

me+mom Q+A 2015

Yes, I interviewed her on stage about her life + career journey. She talked about how different it was for women growing up in the 40s, 50s and 60s (she was born in 1947). I learned a lot about her during our conversation!

Afterwards, so many people came up to her to say THANKS. (A few came up to me and said our conversation inspired them to heal their mother/daughter relationship and try again – wow).

My mom was shocked that my attendees were so grateful to hear her wisdom and story.

I told her: YOUR STORY MATTERS.

By witnessing my work, my mom now knows that my sister Julie (she passed away in 1994) works through me. She now sees this is a family business.

She gets it. And we are committed to getting each other, to seeing each other as people and not only “mom” or “daughter.”

To pull in extra help with this, I invited my mom to a session with my therapist the day after my retreat ended. The breakthrough that occurred in that room with my therapist holding SPACE for us was HUGE.

The little girl in me HAD A VOICE. The mother in her FINALLY HEARD what I was trying to say my entire life.

Tears.

Hugs.

Seeing each other.

Isn’t that what we all want?

To be seen.

Heard.

Felt.

Held.

The relationship with my mother hasn’t always been easy, but it IS worth it.

I’m sure there will be more bumps in the road, but that’s life. It’s not smooth sailing all the time.

And I can honestly say that I’m giving this relationship my best effort moving forward.

As a mother, I’m modeling this for my children so that they see how committed I am to love, forgiveness and staying OPEN.

Do you have a challenging relationship in your life? (Who doesn’t?!)

I GET IT.

I so get it.

What I’ve learned is this: the people in your life have something to teach you … just like you have something to teach them.

We are each others’ students and teachers.

Get help. Therapists, coaches, healers and guides are AMAZING supports.

Read empowering books.

Get your thoughts and feelings out.

Journal.

Stay open.

Stay faithful.

Do what you need to do. (Sometimes the healthiest way to move forward is to end a relationship with someone you love.)

Be who you really are.

Create healthy boundaries, but don’t let those boundaries rob you of the richness that is being IN RELATIONSHIP with all of its messiness and grace.

Moving to the next level in your business and life is IMPOSSIBLE without being IN relationship with A LOT of people.

Keeping Your Marriage Alive As You Build Your Business

alfond inn

I’ve been obsessed with relationships since I was a young girl.

My parents divorcing when I was in 4th grade (they separated when I was a 2nd grader) definitely had something to do with it. As I got older and started dating, I started analyzing the ingredients of a healthy relationship.

This analysis took the form of lots of experimentation in the dating realm! Most of my experiments involved crashing and burning. Some were rather successful.

In college at the University of Florida, I was so interested in exploring the dynamics of relationships that I took a course called Marriage and Family. I learned the ins and outs of divorce rates and how to not be a statistic (marrying later tended to be helpful, according to the data back in 1999).

I knew I wanted to have all of the knowledge, tips and tricks to build a healthy relationship that could withstand the ups and downs of life, children, career shifts, relocation, you name it.

When I met Steven in February 2003 and we decided to spend our lives together, it was exciting.

“Finally! He’s here,” I gushed.

During our engagement, I talked him in to going to a “Marriage Success Workshop” in NYC. So smart!

We learned communication skills, how to read each other’s body language and that if you only have sex when you’re not tired or in the mood then you’ll never have sex (true!).

All of this training and digging deep and loving each other through thick and thin has led to us being married for 10 years. It still blows me away that we’ve been married for a decade.

We’ve been through job changes, business evolution, financial changes, the birth of 3 children, moving from NYC to Massachusetts, celebration and disappointment.

There have been days where I’ve wanted to DRIVE far, far away BY MYSELF and DISAPPEAR.

There are days when we get on each other’s nerves!

There are days when I want to never hear another word about the Cleveland Browns.

There are days when all I want to do is work on my business and help my people.

I’m at a point in my business where things are TAKING OFF in new and exciting ways. I literally could stay up until 2 a.m. every night and still have a shitload of stuff to take care of the next day. It’s that full on.

So when Steven came to me recently with a last minute opportunity to go to Orlando, Florida for a work trip he was going on, I very easily could have said, “NO!”

Our kids had just gone back to school and I was FINALLY settling back into a rhythm, which I desperately needed!

My plate was overflowing: enrolling students in Get Gutsy Coach Training School, preparing for my retreat ALCHEMY Live, serving my current clients, and building out a brand new initiative that I’ll be ready to share with you soon. Plus, I’m in Gabby Bernstein’s Spirit Junkie Masterclass Level 1 and am prepping to take Level 2 next month.

See what I’m talking about? FULL PLATE.

But instead of letting FEAR make my decision (will I fall behind? can I handle a flight with 3 kids? will it be too hot in Florida?), I allowed LOVE to take over instead.

LOVE for my marriage, LOVE for my family, LOVE for my mom (who lives near Orlando), LOVE for adventure, and LOVE for my tribe who benefits when I’m HAPPY EXPLORING THE WORLD.

And I remembered why I built my business the way I have … because my goal has always been MAXIMUM FREEDOM + FLEXIBILITY. When I started out on my entrepreneurial journey in 2008, I always said I wanted the ability to work when I want, with whom I want and where I want.

And that has been my driving force.

Because I never wanted to choose between WORK + ADVENTURE.

I never wanted to have to allocate 2 or 4 or 6 week’s vacation time over the course of the year.

I wanted FULL control over my schedule.

Because calling my own shots and going on adventures – big, small and everything in between – lights me UP.

That’s why entrepreneurship + the coaching life is so perfect for me + my family.

So I said YES to Steven’s invitation because it was the best decision for our family. It allowed us to keep our SPARK burning.

The awesome thing is that during the 3-night trip, my business generated $6,000. When I wasn’t at Animal Kingdom or Epcot, I was able to serve my students in my Tribe Building Bootcamp course. And I hosted a last-minute meetup and got to hang out with one of my students (and her kids!) in the next class of my coach certification course.

Don’t you just love online business? I DO! I DO!

Don’t you just love marriage? I DO! I DO!

Don’t you just love BUSINESS + MARRIAGE? I DO! I DO!

I’m curious … why did you fall in love with your partner or spouse?

What shared passions do you have?

How are you doing breathing life into your BUSINESS + your RELATIONSHIP?

Where might you need support?

It’s a delicate balancing act for sure.

For our 5 year wedding anniversary, we went to a couples retreat at Kripalu called “Finding Passion and Joy in Your Relationship.” We made vision boards that pulled us into our next chapter.

That retreat led us to the clarity that we were ready to move out of NYC and relocate to the Berkshires of Massachusetts. I share the whole story in my bestselling book “Get Gutsy.”

Would a retreat be good for the two of you?

Would regular date night?

Would having a digital detox day where you don’t look at your devices or work on your business?

Feel your way into this. Your relationship depends on it.

I encourage you to think about what unites YOUR FAMILY. Write down your ideas. Important stuff.

In our case, Steven and I fell in love over a shared passion for travel and seeing the world. As parents, this continues to unite us as a family.

When Steven travels for work, we make a strong effort to join him. This isn’t always possible (like this coming weekend when he heads to a college football game in Mobile, Alabama).

But often we can journey together to a new place or simply some other home away from home that we want to check out! We pull the strings, make the plans, shack up in one hotel room (first night is always the hardest!), and explore this beautiful planet.

When it’s all said and done, I want us to be able to say: we spent as much time together having fun and spreading joy as we could.
