Get Gutsy Podcast Transcript – Faith + Hustle
I want to talk to you today about faith and hustle.
You’ve got to really embrace that as you do your work in the world. When I say doing your work in the world, that applies to you whether you’re a full-time entrepreneur, a corporate gal building your venture as a side hustle, a stay-at-home mom launching your venture when your kids are sleeping, or perhaps you work in the government sector. There are so many ways to slice it. The point is you’re creating a body of work that you’re proud of.
I have a friend who is running for a political office and I’m supporting her campaign. I’m co-hosting a fundraising event for her and happy to do so. Running for office requires a tremendous amount of courage and she is putting herself out there and putting her platform out there. Love it.
So, whatever you’re up to in the world, just know that it’s going to require faith and hustle.
Even when I was in my last corporate job, it was very entrepreneurial because I got a cut of the profits of my creations, which were the events I produced.
And it was nerve-wracking because we were totally evaluated on the profitability of our events.
I learned to live with that feeling but it was uncomfortable for me a lot of the time. It was comfortable when the events were doing well and they were already out in the world and people were signing up and we were in a really great economic cycle at that time.
I had events that were quite profitable and things were easy. Things were easy when things were going well. I still had challenges of course. I had to deal with speakers dropping out and me having to make changes at the last minute and that was nerve-wracking for me because there was a lot of elements to that job that I couldn’t control.
Any other control freaks out there? I don’t think I’m alone out there, but I’ve learned to soften my grip.
Anything that we do is going to require faith and hustle.
Hustle looks like this: doing the work, doing the work, doing the work even when the results aren’t instantaneous, even when the results aren’t immediate. Getting up and doing the work. Being consistent and showing up.
You all know, if you’ve been following me, or if you’re new to my world (what’s up?) I’m Jenny Fenig and I have created this movement called Get Gutsy.
I have a book called Get Gutsy(go check it out on Amazon here). I have a podcast called Get Gutsy. If you haven’t yet subscribed to the podcast on itTunes or Stitcher, go ahead and subscribe, girl. And please spread the word about it.
We have over 45 episodes and they are absolutely amazing.
As I’ve built this movement, I’ve really had to put myself out there every day. Every day. And there are times that I don’t want to. There are times when I’m like, “Oh my gosh! I just want to go into my little creative cave and not talk to anybody.” Not have to like do anything. And there are times that I do that and it’s just what I need.
Like recently I was in a launch for my course called Cash in on Your Calling. We have 40 women in the course.
But I admit, pulling all the pieces together for the launch was tiring. It’s tiring putting your work out there. You feel so vulnerable. You feel so naked.
The night before we closed enrollment, I felt like my throat was starting to hurt and instead of just like staying up late, ignoring my body and doing MORE, I was like, “You know what? Some people would stay up late and ignore their body. That’s not me. I’m going to bed. I’ve hustled enough and now my body is saying to me, ‘Jenny, rest.’”
And so, I went to bed very early that night and I got a really, really solid night sleep and I felt so much better the next day because I was rested and was more me.
When you haven’t slept well and it has caught up to you and you’re just feeling like crap, that’s not a good place for me. It’s not healthy and I don’t have a positive view of the world when I’m overly exhausted.
And I know that feeling because I have three kids. And so, that sleep deprivation that I experienced with each child, I was feeling it that particular day. And it’s not a good terrain for me to be hanging out in. I’ve learned.
I also know that when I get the rest I need, I’m going to be able to get back on the hustle train and serve up the teachings you come to expect from me.
I’m consistent, and consistency is HUGE as you build your body of work in the world.
If you want to be seen as a spiritual business leader, you better be CONSISTENT.
Because leaders are consistent. They don’t “ghost out” and disappear on their people that came here to serve.
In terms of my business, you know you’re going to get podcast episodes from me every week.
If you’re on my email list, we recently re-launched our weekly newsletter and we share with you some really great stuff. You’re going to get that from me every week. You’re also going to get other emails from me that are helpful.
You’re going to have regular social media posts from me on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. I’m not going to ghost out on you and you’re not going to be like, “Where did Jenny go? I haven’t heard from her in weeks.” That’s not me. I’m going to be consistent and that’s the hustle.
And so, I want you all to really embrace what your hustle is. You don’t have to kill yourself. There are certain entrepreneurs and they don’t sleep and they pride themselves on that, and that’s fine if that’s your way.
That’s not me. You’re not going to get that from me because I do believe in sleep. I believe that my body is a temple and so it needs certain things that maybe other people don’t need.
But you have to understand your own hustle, right? And don’t be so lazy and scared to make a move. Seriously you’ve gotta just get out there and be consistent. And there are times that you don’t want to do whatever it is that you need to do but you’ve got to go for it. You’ve got to slay those dragons. You got to get out there.
And the faith piece is trusting that it’s all happening. It’s all happening for you. But it’s the inside job. You’ve got to have a belief in something greater than yourself. Call it whatever you will. I call it God. You don’t have to call it God if that doesn’t work for you. You can call it the universe, higher power, source, angels, goddess, the divine. Call it whatever you want.
Faith is believing in something greater than yourself. Believing that there is – I mean there’s just something extraordinary going on here that we can’t even fully describe or even understand with our rational mind. But I promise you that by the end of your days here, it will make sense to you. You have to be patient. You’ve got to be patient and trust and dig deep.
And know that entrepreneurship is intense. There are times when I’m like, “What the heck was I thinking? This is too hard. This requires more of me than I feel like I even have.”
But that is when the biggest growth occurs. That is when the breakthrough occurs.
Because I have birthed three babies, I understand the feeling of transition, when you’re about to go into the other side.
I birthed two of three of those babies naturally. I labored with them, no drugs. My middle guy Luke was breach so I had a C-section and my first-ever surgery with him. I couldn’t go through all of the labor and the transition and the birthing naturally. But with my other two babies Sean and Kate, I did. And that transition point is the point when you’re like, “Oh my God! I can’t. There is no way. There is no way. I can’t. It’s too much. I don’t think I can do it.”
I remember looking at my birth team and my husband just going, “I don’t think I can do it. I don’t think I can do it.” And then you’re brought to your knees. You’re just like breaking inside of you. You’re twisting. You’re evolving. You’re opening. And that is when the extraordinary growth occurs. That is when the gems occur. That is when you realize “Wow!” Who you are and what you’re made of. I mean you are made of stardust and you are made of dreams and magic and strength and beauty and grace and just everything.
And that is what is going to be required of you as you get your great work out there.
All right? So, you’ve gotta get gutsy. That’s why I created my podcast for you. That’s why I wrote my book for you. That’s why I do everything that I do for you.
I’m here to guide you into your next level, into your greatest expression, into whatever it is that you are birthing next in the world. I feel like I’m a midwife for your dreams and your creations and helping you help your people.
Know this: you have a tribe right now and I really want to help you help them.
